Night Ways No. 5, 2006-2007 gouache/paper, grommets, programmed LED lights, 45 x 64" Karin Davie New drawings and sculpture With an innovative use of unconventional materials, Karin Davie translates the expressive and evocative, metaphorical and performative qualities of her paintings into drawing and sculpture. The new "Night Ways" drawing series integrates LED lights with Davie's distinctive use of gesture. Dense velvety surfaces of torrid black brushstrokes conceal underlying colors that are revealed by negative spaces. This reversal shifts the attention away from the undulating and looping forms in space to the gaps in between. It alludes to a nocturnal urban landscape flushed with neon light and shadow. The lurking of an inner life is evoked: one punctuated by the rhythmic pulsing and mesmerizing movement of the programmed lights. For the second part of the exhibition, Davie has created a sculpture "Induction: Symptom 1", which is a sinuous mound of neoprene strips and mirrored metal. This sculpture is reminiscent of the "soft sculptures" from the 1970s and continues to explore Davie's fascination with performance, distortion, and the interior/exterior relationship within an image and to the viewer. Like the drawings, it is an image engaged in metamorphosis. The playfully soft but undeniably industrial material combined with the liquid-like surface of the mirror underscores the perceptual tensions inherent in all of Davie's work.
