Kevin Francis Gray

Goff + Rosenthal is pleased to present a solo exhibition of sculptures by London-based artist Kevin Francis Gray. Constructed out of cast resin and glass crystals, these works merge classical forms with a gritty, urban aesthetic. Figures cloaked in modern-day streetwear are given a meditative, somber quality by the smooth, reflective nature of the material. The luster of the works' surface captivates the eye as the gaze becomes transfixed on the subtle contours of each shape. Unique to this particular show, Gray has completed his first life size marble sculpture. Rich in opposition, these sculptures project a sense of nobility and admiration for an often marginalized and consciously melancholic inner-city youth subculture.

A delicate tension between immobility and action circulates throughout Gray's sculptures. Much like Giuseppe Sammartino's sculpture "Veiled Christ," Gray's life-size sculpture, "Ghost Girl" feels frozen in the midst of action. Glass crystals flood downward from her face as if to create a pool of precious stones beneath her feet. The stream shimmers in the light, its dynamics change as the viewer's position shifts, and yet "Ghost Girl" remains hauntingly still. That is also the case in "Voodoo Girls" where long, black plastic beads are affixed to a series of cast resin skeleton heads that float preciously high above a door. This contrast - between static and kinetic energy, glossy and matted surfaces and hard and soft lines - breathes a sense of life into these inanimate, often stoic individuals.

Kevin Francis Gray has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade; MAMA Rotterdam; P.A.N. Museum, Naples and the Royal Academy, London. He has also had solo exhibitions in New York, London, Naples, Hamburg and Cologne. His work has appeared in such publications as Sleek Magazine for Art and Fashion, Time Out, Flash Art and Metrolife, among others. This is his first solo exhibition with Goff + Rosenthal.
