Kim Fisher

John Connelly Presents is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Kim Fisher.

Using a minimalist vernacular and rigorous system of paint application, Kim Fisher's beautiful abstract canvases explore the eccentricities of abstract painting and help re-assert abstraction at the forefront of the current dialogue in contemporary art. Building upon past formal models of monochromatic painting set by such historic artists as Ad Reinhardt, Josef Albers and Robert Ryman, Fisher brings the controversial content of fashion, beauty and style to play in a technique that has sometimes been stymied by a reputation of cold intellectualism or superfluous decoration.

Areas of exploration in painting, once deeply regarded as fundamental to the understanding of the nature of painting itself, such as abstraction, color theory and formalism, have, one could argue, become secondary to a current obsession with content, narrative and figuration. By choosing to make densely layered abstract paintings that reflect the intensities of our everyday fascination with all things "glamorous" (Fisher often cites the refraction of light and color in advertisements for gemstones and jewelry as inspiration), the artist simultaneously celebrates and critiques the insatiable and ubiquitous desire for success, beauty and power that we find in both the art world and the world at large.

Kim Fisher's paintings were recently exhibited in New York at the 2004 Whitney Biennial and can currently be seen in the 2004 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach. She has had solo exhibitions China Art Object in Los Angeles; Midway Contemporary Art in St. Paul, MN; Shane Campbell, Chicago, IL and in 2005 will have a solo exhibition at The Modern Institute, Glasgow.

This will be the artist's first solo show in New York.

Exhibition: November 13 - December 18, 2004
Gallery hours: Tue-Sat 11am - 6pm
