Liz Phillips
new sound works

Frederieke Taylor gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of Liz Phillips "new sound works", in the Project Room.

Phillips is best known for her large scale, interactive sound and multimedia installations. In this exhibition, the artist will show two more intimate and self-contained sound sculptures. These intricate sculptures form visual compositions of sound based on the principles of resonance and sympathetic vibration.

In the "Path of Least Resistance" a series of sound events take place in a shallow water tank. Sound samples derived from the objects in the tank travel through it and go back to the objects they were made from. Due to resonance and the path of least resistance, each object becomes the voice for its extended sounds. In the other work, Phillips creates a new sensory soundscape inspired by a waterfall, with sound samples derived from flowing water.

Liz Phillips' sound installations often reflect their audiences, whose presence or absence, movement or stillness determines the combinations of the sound.

Not only does the audience activate the sound, they also witness the three-dimensional sculpture that evolves. In this way, through both sound and physical activity, an installation is composed and realized.

Liz Phillips' sound and multimedia installations have been exhibited at numerous art institutions and public spaces including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Lincoln Center Festival 2002, the Hudson River Museum, the Jewish Museum, Creative Time's Anchorage, the World Financial Center, the Kitchen, the Capp Street Project, San Francisco and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. She has also collaborated on interactive dance and video events with Merce Cunningham, Nam June Paik, Robert Kovich and others.
