Lori Nix
Lost

The Alona Kagan Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photography by American artist Lori Nix. In this new series entitled "Lost", Nix continues her investigation of the constructed landscape with ten new seductive images. These lush, large-scale photographs depict scenes of isolation, loss and impending danger. Nix meticulously re-creates these ominous scenes by photographing her miniature model dioramas that she carefully constructs by hand.

In "At Sea", Nix deftly recreates a perilous and tumultuous ocean, which swallows up two tiny, life jackets lost at sea. There is no boat in site and the stormy and foreboding sky seems to suggest their owners' imminent fate. In "California Forest Fire", Nix depicts a peaceful and charming scene, featuring a silver Airstream camped out in the forest next to a placid river. Within, the inhabitants are happily watching T.V. and are apparently oblivious to the approaching forest fire, which is about to overtake them.

Like much of Nix's previous work, this series features highly detailed artificial creations, in which she blurs the line between truth and illusion. She subverts the traditions of landscape photography in order to create her own humorously dark world. Her photographs toy with romantic notions of landscape and her lush, rich color and theatrical lighting magnify a sense of isolation and melancholy as her photos take us to places off the beaten path. The obvious artificiality of the scenes does not diminish the tension created in the photographs. It is the "fake" quality that enhances the enjoyment of the illusion. The narratives purposely remain open ended, inviting the viewer to complete the story.

Lori Nix has exhibited at the California Museum of Photography, Riverside, CA, Diverseworks, Houston TX, G. Gibson Gallery, Seattle, WA, White Columns in New York City, SF Camerawork in San Francisco, and the Houston Center for Photography in Houston, TX and in 2002 Light Work published a monograph of her work. Lori Nix was a recipient of a 2004 NYFA Artist' Fellowship, and this is her second solo show with Alona Kagan.
