Ihr lustvoll versponnener Kunstkosmos ist breit angelegt und umfasst Modelle, Skulpturen, Installationen, Malerei und Video und nimmt Absurdes ebenso wie auch Abgründe und Irrwege in sich auf. Bekannt geworden ist das Künstlerduo mit Rauminstallationen, welche die bürgerliche Wohn- und Bildungskultur zum Ausgangspunkt nehmen und diese listig unterwandern. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung im Aargauer Kunsthaus stehen grosse Räume für ein Chef-Büro, eine Wohnlandschaft und eine Bibliothek. Statt wohliger Ordnung dominiert in diesen Räumen anarchische Bricollage in Form eines Sammelsuriums an selbst gebastelten Einrichtungs- und Gebrauchsgegenständen, Brockenhausmöbeln, Fundstücken sowie Skulpturen und Bilder. Jeder Raum ist Zeugnis der ausufernden Fantasiewelt der beiden Künstler. Lutz & Guggisberg zelebrieren das Absonderliche und Vieldeutige und schaffen grenzenlose Assoziationsräume. Dabei kommt auch der Sprachkunst eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Seit Jahren arbeiten die beiden Künstler an einer imaginären Bibliothek: Bücher-Attrappen mit verheissungsvollen Titeln, Klappentexten und Covers gehören zu ihren Spezialitäten. Für Aarau haben sie die Bibliothek bedeutend erweitert. Da sich die Arbeitsweise von Lutz & Guggisberg durch eine kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung und ein Recycling vorhandener Werke und Materialien auszeichnet, wird es im Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau zu einem situationsbezogenen Mix von alt und neu kommen, und die Ausstellung wird nicht zuletzt vom improvisierenden Geist der beiden Aktivisten durchströmt. Neben den raumbezogenen Installationen zeigt die Ausstellung auch ausgewählte Werke in musealerer Präsentation sowie einen Einblick in die kontinuierliche Bildproduktion des Künstlerduos. Die Ausstellung und der dazu erschienene Katalog erheben den Anspruch, erstmals einen umfassenden Einblick in das Werk von Lutz & Guggisberg zu bieten. Their delightfully fanciful art cosmos is broad in its scope and includes models, sculptures, installations, painting and video; it accommodates both the absurd and mysterious or flawed. The artist-duo first made a name for themselves with room installations which took as their point of departure middle-class interior decor and intellectual culture, which they cleverly subverted. At the heart of the exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus are large rooms intended as a manager's office, a landscaped interior and a library. Instead of a pleasing sense of order, however, these rooms are permeated by an anarchical make-shift ambience in the form of a motley collection of self-made furniture and utility items, pieces from the thrift shop, found objects, and sculptures and picture. Each room testifies to the artists' exuberant imagination. Lutz & Guggisberg celebrate the strange and the ambiguous and thereby create unlimited associative spaces. In doing this they accord great importance to the art of language. For years now the two artists have been working on an imaginary library: among their specialities are mock-books with promising titles, blurbs and covers. For Aarau they have considerably expanded that library. Given the fact that their mode of working is characterised by a constant process of developing and recycling existing works and materials, the Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau will have a site-related mix of the old and the new, and the exhibition will be imbued not least with the improvising spirit of the two activists. In addition to space-related installations, the exhibition will also include selected works presented in a form appropriate to a museum, and a survey of the artists' continuous picture production. The exhibition and the respective catalogue aspire to providing the first comprehensive overview of the work of Lutz & Guggisberg.
