Lyle Starr
Double Gemini

Alona Kagan Gallery is very pleased to announce "Double Gemini," an exhibition by Lyle Starr featuring several large paintings on canvas, two drawings and a wall painting.

Alluding to the Gemini twins and the special astrological condition of Double Gemini, Starr interprets the "double-double" state as a nearly pathological and reflexive transaction between subject and object. Invoking a projected world of the mind, he presents a painted Shadow mural whose composition, like an echo between observer and the observed, mirrors the image of another work in the show. Applied directly to the wall in gray tones that mimic the bright patchwork color of his canvases, his mural emphasizes the gallery itself as an expressive container by conflating the standard architectural context with parallel thematic content.

Open-ended and Janus-like in their reversibility, Starr's newest compositions use colored tangles of human shapes to create his signature puzzle-like compositions. His work is an illusion of multi-hued translucency, retaining its status as a colored object by confusing and protracting the gaze. The silhouetted edges of his painted shadow forms shift and reverse without closure, eliciting a problem-solving response and catalyzing his work's psychological dimension.

This is Lyle Starr's third solo show with the gallery. He completed a handmade paper edition, "All Fours" with Dieu Donné Papermill, NY, and a video backdrop for former NYC Ballet soloist, Peter Boal at the Joyce Theater, NY in 2005. Starr's work was included in the recent encyclopedia of camouflage "Disruptive Pattern Material" London 2004. He has shown internationally and is included in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, NY, The Museum of Modern Art, NY and the newly inaugurated Glenstone Museum, Potomac, MD.
