Somewhere Near I, 2002 Oil on canvas, 120 x 180 cm Marisa Purcell in between Marisa Purcell's recent work emphasises the ambiguity of perception and inspires us to take notice of how we see, to examine the layers of meaning arising from our participation in the world. Using architectural space as a starting point, the "in between" series emerge from ordinary, anonymous places; in simple rooms, train stations and public foyers. Through a merging of space and memory, the pictures capture a moment of lost time - a fragment of light passing through a window, or a cavernous space implied beyond the picture plane. We are left with questions concerning the contents of our thoughts that resonate beyond these arrested moments in time. The paintings are suggestive rather than descriptive, alluding to places rather than describing them explicitly. Windows, doorways and reflections become devices to represent neither the interior nor the exterior but a world in between. These works engage the viewer in a subliminal and emotive way, challenging memory and habitual responses. Their ambiguity encourages the viewer to spend time with the works to allow different readings to emerge. Whilst the pictures retain some reference to reality, they intentionally play with visual uncertainty to spur examination of the particular ways we have come to expect pictures to affect us. Marisa Purcell was born in Australia in 1971 and has been living in Switzerland for the past year. Since her first show in 1993, she has maintained a dedicated exhibition schedule. Her most recent grant is a residency at the Cite Internationale de Paris for late 2004.
