The Dead Speak, 2006 oil, pencil, paint stick on canvas, 80 x 80 inches Mark Dutcher Come and Go Portals, braided rag rugs, and mandalas become subjects in "Come and Go", an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture by Los Angeles based artist Mark Dutcher. With this, his second solo exhibition at SolwayJones, Dutcher continues, as with his previous exhibition "After The Fall" in 2004, to explore imagery about death, memory, and the afterlife. In the painting "Above and Below" images of braided rag rugs float back in forth in a universe of objects and planets. In the artist's own words, "braided rag rugs interested me because I like the idea of something made with scraps of clothing from someone's life. I then became interested in near death experiences and the idea that when a person dies they go through a tunnel, towards a light, as images of their life pass by them and the stuff we hold onto becomes meaningless and breaks apart in this tunnel." In the two paintings, "The Light Pours Out Of Me", and "The Dead Speak", pictures of hourglasses, body fragments and symbols of a life once lived all seeming to rotate towards the center surround graphite and painted blue spirals. This exhibition will also include a new series of suspended sculptures, and several recent oil and wax drawings. An exhibition catalogue with essay by Doug Harvey will be available this fall. Mark Dutcher's work is in the collection of The Orange County Museum of Art, and was included in the 2004 California Biennial.
