 Markus Huemer .arcadia Click for english text Wenn Markus Huemer (*1968 in Linz/A, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin/D) seine neuesten Werke unter dem Generaltitel ".arcadia" stellt, so rekurriert er einerseits auf die illusorische Kraft des kunstgeschichtlichen Topos Arkadien und fordert andererseits die Umbenennung der gebräuchlichen Suffixe wie ".com", ".net" oder der gängigen Landesbezeichnungen wie ".de", ".ch" oder ".dk" in ".arcadia". Der Ausstellungstitel verweist in ironischer Absicht auf diese artifizielle und idyllische Scheinwelt und gleichsam markiert ".arcadia" humorvoll eine rein fiktive Lokalisation im virtuellen Netzraum, der um nichts weniger artifiziell und idyllisch ist, als das Arkadien der historischen Malereien. Der österreichische Künstler überprüft in seinen Arbeiten die Kunsttauglichkeit der "Neuen Medien" mit den Erfahrungen der alten Medien und ihrer wichtigsten Disziplin, der Malerei. Für den Künstler, der eine Ausbildung in Kunstgeschichte besitzt und mit traditioneller Malerei seinen Werdegang begann, sind sowohl gemalte Welten als auch Netzwelten Orte einer imaginierten Welt - einer Welt, die "so artifiziell ist, dass es in ihr nicht einmal den Tod wirklich gibt". Die Ausstellung wird neben sechs neu für die Ausstellung produzierte Installationen auch Arbeiten der letzten beiden Jahre, sowie einige ausgewählte, ältere Referenzarbeiten präsentieren. Die bisher grösste, institutionelle Einzelausstellung von Markus Huemer wird zudem an das internationale Medienfestival VIPER in Basel angebunden. On the other hand, however, he is calling for the redefinition of commonly used suffixes such as ".com", ".net" or country abbreviations like ".de" or ".ch" in ".arcadia". The exhibition title is a jibe at this artificial and idyllic world of illusion but, at the same time, ".arcadia" also light-heartedly marks a purely fictitious in the virtual space of the Net, which is at least as artificial and idyllic as the Arcadias in historical painting. In his work, the Austrian artist tests the so-called "new media" for their suitability for art against the experiences of classical media and their most important discipline – painting. The artist, who has a degree in art history and began his career with traditional painting, sees both the painted worlds and those of the Net as places in an imaginary world that is so "artificial that even death does not really exist in it". Alongside the six new installations made specifically for this exhibition, works from the past two years as well as a selection of older work as reference will also be presented. This exhibition represents Markus Huemer's far largest one-person show at an institution so far. It wil be connected with the international festival for new media VIPER in Basel. |
