 Mary Mattingly The Stage A verisimilitude of forms skate by a familiar horizon. You are in California, no, you are in your home, in front of your computer screen. You are dreaming your usual daydream. The discussion of place has become increasingly pertinent as customary environments collide due to economics, big business, and efficiency in sub/urban planning. More and more, this is confused as the idea of landscape conforms to its representation through media’s simulacrum. In her series of photographs entitled "The Stage", Mary Mattingly creates a curious play between artifice and reality, between normal and extraordinary. With her work, she adds new meaning to the placeless space, infusing it with a surreal presence. The photograph has gained a reputation for its mutability, its rapid growth and distortion. Can it any longer reflect what is real, honest, and present? Mattingly employs a variety of modeling techniques in the photographs, balancing these with the unaltered image. The exhibition will also include drawings and other mappings of interpretive place that allude to the interaction of "new" space and its inhabitants.
