Initiated in 1994 by the film CREMASTER 4, which was followed successively by CREMASTER 1, 5 and 2, this highly ambitious project, to which Matthew Barney has devoted over eight years of his artistic activity, reaches its conclusion this year with CREMASTER 3, which will receive its French premiere during this event. Reviving the utopian spirit of the "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art), this American artist born in 1967 has extended his practice to every medium, creating a baroque imaginary world that fuses Greek mythology and professional athletics, Hollywood cinema and magic, psychoanalysis and hardcore music. This international touring show bringing together the major pieces from the CREMASTER cycle is being organised by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, in cooperation with the Musée dArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. For the Parisian show, Matthew Barney and the curators at the ARC are planning an original recreation inspired by the configuration of the museum. This highly controlled yet spectacular installation defining the territory of the exhibition also emphasises the link between cinema and visual art.
