Maureen Gallace is an artist who works within the self-imposed confines of a rigorously limited scale and subject-matter. She is a painter of small, unpeopled landscapes in which a modest number of elements - a house, a barn, a boat; bushes, grass, sky - recur with a quietly mesmerising insistence. In focusing on a few favoured motifs, an isolated coastal road or an unassuming and solemn building, Gallace succeeds in isolating something that is both universally familiar and at the same time, utterly mysterious. "... there is a distinctly deserted feeling about the pictures. The effect is that the painter, and by extension the observer, enjoys a curiously privileged relationship with the scene, one akin to ownership... In terms of painting she can be seen in relation to Edward Hopper, Giorgio Morandi and Alex Katz...". (Aidan Dunne, The Irish Times, 6 August 2004) Since the artist began exhibiting in 1990, Gallace has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the US, and also in Britain, Continental Europe and Japan. In 1996 she had a one-person exhibition at the Museum Schloss-Hardenberg in Velbert, Germany. More recently she has had solo shows at Kerlin Gallery Dublin (2001), Maureen Paley-Interim Art London (2003), 303 Gallery, New York (2003) and Dallas Museum of Art Texas (2003) and the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2004). Group shows in which she has participated include "Slow Art/Painting in New York Now" at PS1, New York (1992), "Ideal Standard Life" at Spiral/Wacoal Art Centre, Tokyo (1996), "New Found Land Scape" at Kerlin Gallery (1997), "Painting: Now and Forever" at Pat Hearn Gallery and Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, (1998), "American Standard", Babara Gladstone Gallery, New York (2002) and "Now is a Good Time", Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York (2004). Gallace's work is represented in many collections, both public and private, including the collections of the Wadsworth Atheneum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
