Composée de peintures et dessins récents des années 2004-2005, l'exposition sera accompagnée d'un premier catalogue, "Michael Rodriguez: 0405", dont le texte est rédigé par Barry Schwabsky, auteur et critique d'art. Michael Rodriguez fait évoluer son procédé de création instinctif et pourtant mécanique, iconique et pourtant neutre, vers des compositions multilatérales qui se dissolvent dans l'espace blanc environnant. Les sphères peintes gravitent autour d'obscurs "abîmes" faits de fibres de rayonne et d'émail, se déversant et apparaissant comme à l'intérieur de la toile. Ces espaces en retrait placent les sphères, par magnétisme, dans une composition harmonieuse, comme si se révélait, de toutes parts, la traduction d'une langue calligraphique antique jusque là indéchiffrable. Capturant l'espace à travers les sphères, des chemins de couleurs lumineux ou plus sombres accentuent l'équilibre polymorphique du système dans son ensemble, pendant que s'écoulent des chutes de peinture qui atteignent le fond de l'œuvre et marquent l'achèvement et la compréhension du déroulement des étapes de cet événement. Après abstraction géométrique, expressionnisme abstrait, minimalisme et pop, l'œuvre de Rodriguez est entièrement ouverte à l'interprétation, correspondant à la question éternellement actuelle "qu'est-ce que la peinture abstraite?". Rodriguez oscille sans cesse entre l'archaïque et le visionnaire. Il utilise l'abstraction comme un véhicule, honorant toujours la représentation dans son voyage simultanément moléculaire et interstellaire à travers le temps et l'espace, et soulevant cependant l'idée que la vérité de la matière est finalement toujours un mystère. Né à Miami en Floride, Michael Rodriguez a exposé dans des galeries et des institutions aux Etats-Unis et au Canada. Il a bénéficié du NYFA Fellow et a reçu le prix de la Pollack-Krasner Foundation. Son œuvre est représentée dans des collections prestigieuses telles que celle du Museum of Modern Art de New York. Michael Rodriguez est professeur associé au La Guardia Community College à New York City. Consisting of recent paintings and drawings from 2004-2005, the exhibition will be accompanied by a debut catalog, "Michael Rodriguez: 0405", with an essay by London based critic and author, Barry Schwabsky. Rodriguez evolves his instinctive, yet mechanical - iconic, yet neutral mark making process towards multilateral compositions vanishing into the surrounding white space. The painted spheres gravitate around dark emptying "chasms" made of rayon fibers and enamel, which are rendered as if inside the surface of the canvas. These receding spaces magnetically configure the spheres into a harmonious composition, as if a vision of ancient calligraphic language reading from all directions. Capturing the space in between the rings, pathways of bright or faint colors eccentuate the polymorphic equilibrium of the system at large, while descending chutes of paint reach towards the bottom of this unfolding event. Geometric abstraction, abstract expressionist, minimalist and pop informed, Rodriguez's oeuvre is entirely open for interpretation, corresponding to the always current question of "what is abstract painting"? Still, Rodriguez teeters between the archaic and the visionary. He employs abstraction as a vehicle, still honoring representation through his simultaneously molecular, interstellar journey through both time and space, however posing the question that the truth of matter is ultimately still a mystery.
