Nobuya Hoki: Waylay, 2002 Oil on canvas, 18 x 13 in (46 x 34 cm) Nobuya Hoki Jone Kvie Oracle I-20 is pleased to present Nobuya Hoki's first exhibition in the United States. This will be a series of paintings and works on paper by the Kyoto-based artist, mainly flat otherworldly landscapes with exaggerated distances and distorted scale. Hoki often begins by covering a canvas with paint and then draws on it with a loose hand. The landscapes, along with several figurative portraits, are made by permeation and the doubling of images, with varying intensity of line and color. The sense of time is conveyed by the repeated use of broken lines, creating subtle images of an imagined environment. Yuko Hasegawa, from the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, has stated that Hoki's details of trees and plants of a forest are drawn in black on one colored surface, and then repeated on a second colored surface "as if seen under infrared light, giving a sense of artificiality. The subject is nature but it is approached in a way that seems to reflect recent bioengineering and genome research". In Japan, Nobuya Hoki has had exhibitions at the Taro Nasu Gallery and NADiff, Tokyo; the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Daiwa Radiator Viewing Room, also in Hiroshima. In 2004, his work was featured in "Officina Asia" at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Bologna; and "Roppongi Crossing: New Visions of Japanese Artists 2004" at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. A sculptural landscape by Jone Kvie, "Oracle" will be shown in I-20's second gallery. This work, 8 feet high, is made of new silver and lacquer. Pieces of this work were cast separately by professional foundry workers in China and Thailand. The visual and sculptural motifs of Kvie's works reflect phenomena and form in nature, including stalactite caves, drifting ice blocks, mountain landscapes, and meteors. Metaphoric and polished, the work "Oracle" is rich in minute detail and monumental in size. Jone Kvie's solo exhibitions include Galleri MGM in Oslo, and Nils Stærk Contemporary Art in Copenhagen. His work was included in "Over the Horizon" (2002) at the Malmo Art Museum in Sweden. Kvie was born in Stavanger, Norway in 1971, and received a graduate degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Norway.
