Mit dem Projekt "Body Proxy" präsentiert das Helmhaus Zürich die erste grosse monographische Ausstellung von Norma Jeane. Das Helmhaus wird in eine abstrakte, laborartige Atmosphäre getaucht. Mit einer interaktiven Installation und einer Reihe von Objekten, die meistens in Zusammenarbeit mit einheimischen Akteuren entstanden sind, suggeriert Norma Jeane eine Lektüre des Körpers als "abstrakt gewordene Entität". Wie der Ausstellungstitel nahe legt, handelt es sich um künstlerische Arbeiten, die als Stellvertreter des menschlichen Körpers verstanden werden können. In Wahrheit ist der Körper aber der Besucher selbst, der in der Ausstellung im Mittelpunkt der Diskussion steht. Es gibt keine Körper (oder Teile davon) zu sehen - ausser denen der Ausstellungsbesucher selbst. Die neue Installation "Loops of Fury/mono" bildet - nicht nur in metaphorischem Sinn - das Herzstück der Ausstellung. Sie besetzt fast das ganze erste Stockwerk des Helmhauses. Die BesucherInnen werden eingeladen, sich mit dem eigenen Herzschlag zu konfrontieren. In dieser interaktiven Sound-Installation, die einzeln betreten werden muss, wird der Herzschlag der BesucherInnen, die das möchten, durch eine Tonanlage wiedergegeben, wobei die Position im Raum die Lautstärke der Wiedergabe bestimmt. Im zweiten Stockwerk richtet sich die Konzentration auf kleine, verdichtete Objekte, deren pragmatische Luzidität in einem spannungsgeladenen Verhältnis zu ihrer auratischen Wirkung steht. Zum Beispiel generieren hunderte von Kontaktlinsen, in Petrischalen konserviert, ein virtuelles Archiv des Visuellen. Und verführerische Juwelen locken mit zersetzendem Inhalt. Norma Jeane wurde in Los Angeles in der Nacht vom 4. auf den 5. August 1962 geboren, als Marilyn Monroe starb. NJ lebt und arbeitet dort, wo die Projekte entstehen. Frühere Ausstellungsbeteiligungen: "Il possibile punto zero" (Fondazione Ambrosetti, Brescia 2003), "Tempo" (MoMA QNS New York 2002), "Unloaded - Coming Up for Air" (Oberschan, 2002), und "Strangers/Etrangers" (PS1/MoMa, New York 2001). "Body Proxy" wird von Giovanni Carmine kuratiert. Die Ausstellung, die von diversen Firmen grosszügig unterstützt wird, reist in veränderter Form weiter nach New York, wo sie im Januar 2005 im Swiss Institute gezeigt wird. Zur Ausstellung "Body Proxy" erscheint eine als Anthologie angelegte Publikation mit Texten von William S. Burroughs, Umberto Galimberti, Paul Virilio u.a., mit Essays von Alessandra Galasso und Giovanni Carmine und mit Abbildungen aus der Ausstellung. Das Buch erscheint im Verlag JRP/Ringier und wird von Cornel Windlin, Zürich, gestaltet. With the project "Body Proxy", the Helmhaus Zurich presents the first large-scale monographic exhibition by Norma Jeane. The Helmhaus will be immersed in an abstract, laboratory-like atmosphere. With an interactive installation and a series of objects, most of which were developed in co-operation with local people, Norma Jeane suggests a reading of the body as an "entity become abstract". As its title indicates, the exhibition presents artistic works that could be understood as representatives of the human body. In fact, however, the body is the visitor himself, who stands at the centre of discussion in the exhibition. There are no bodies (or parts of bodies) to be seen - except those of the visitors. The installation "Loops of Fury/mono" forms the heart of the exhibition, not only in the metaphorical sense. It occupies almost the entire first floor of the Helmhaus. The visitor is invited to confront his own heart-beat. In this interactive sound installation, which must be entered singly, the heart-beat of those visitors who wish to take part is reproduced by a sound system and the visitor's position in the space determines the volume of the reproduction. On the second floor, the visitor's attention is directed to small, condensed objects whose pragmatic lucidity stands in a highly charged relation to the effect of their aura. For example, hundreds of contact lenses conserved in petri dishes generate a virtual archive of the visual. And seductive jewels lure with subversive content. Norma Jeane was born in Los Angeles on the night of August 4-5, 1962, at the same moment when Marilyn Monroe was dying. NJ lives and works in the places where the projects are developed.
