Er lebt und arbeitet in New York und Florida, wo er seit 2000 Associate Professor of Painting an der Florida State University, Tallahasse ist. Als Lehrer ist er zudem an der University of South Florida, Tampa, tätig und als "Visiting Critic" an der Yale University, School of Art. In seinen Werken wird sein afro-amerikanisches Doppelerbe sichtbar: Die ästhetische Strenge seiner geometrischen Bilder sind deutlich der westlichen Moderne verpflichtet. In ihrer dissonanten, ungewohnten Farbgebung, ihrem häufig wechselnden Rhythmus und ihrem Aufbau, der nicht auf die Mitte konzentriert ist, sondern den Rand betont, sind Oditas Bilder aber deutlich von afrikanischen Tradition geprägt. Der Künstler bewegt sich gekonnt im kulturellen Grenzland zwischen zunehmend miteinander verbunden Kulturen - er untersucht die Unterschiede zwischen ihnen und die Komplexität des Begriffs "Identität". Odita earned a B.F.A. with Distinction from Ohio State University and an M.F.A. from Bennington College in Vermont. During the 1990s, he was an artist, a curator, and a critic for Flash Art International, and a writer and consulting editor for Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art. In 2000, Odita became an associate professor of painting at Florida State University in Tallahassee, in 2002-2003 a visiting associate professor of painting at University of South Florida in Tampa, and 2003-2004, a Visiting Critic at Yale University, School of Art. This year Odita will have one-person exhibitions in Zurich and Frankfurt. In 2002, Odita had one-person exhibitions in Frankfurt and Berlin; at Wintergarden, Vienna; Art Statements, Art Miami Basel; and the Miami Art Museum, Florida. He has participated in group exhibitions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; PS.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; Institute for Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Zacheta National Gallery, Warsaw, Poland; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; the Kunsthalle St. Gallen, Switzerland; Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico City; and the Second Johannesburg Biennale.
