No Wind Can Blow Us Down

Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of drawings by Oskar Korsár, entitled "No Wind Can Blow Us Down". This will be the artist's first solo exhibition in the United States.

In his recent ink drawings, Oskar Korsár creates unique worlds of fantasy and melancholy. The artist begins by creating a series of cross-hatchings on multiple sheets of paper, which he then combines to create large-scale renderings of adolescent female figures in commonplace settings. The young women, with overly long arms and legs, awkwardly stand in the silent interiors of their bedrooms or camp out in mysterious forest graveyards. Typically solitary, the figures are engaged in mundane activities, while the narratives of the scenes are guided by a set of fixations and totems prevalent throughout the drawings.

Oskar Korsár's style and imagery are heavy with references, including his own experience from ages 8 to 16 living in a Mongolian yurt without water or electricity in the forests of Northern Sweden. His drawings also recall the work of early German Expressionists and the memento mori tradition, as well as the contemporary graphic arts movement. With a background in graffiti art and formal training in graphic design, the artist freely draws from contemporary American pop icons, such as Mickey Mouse and The Simpsons.

Oskar Korsár's work has been exhibited throughout Sweden, Italy and Switzerland. He graduated from Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Oskar Korsár was born in Umeå, Sweden, in 1977 and currently lives and works in Stockholm.
