Paradise Lost

Francesca DiMattio
, Nils Karsten, Jutta Koether, Shanna Zentner, Skyler Brickley

Marvelli Gallery is pleased to present "Paradise Lost", a group exhibition featuring paintings by Skyler Brickley, Francesca DiMattio, Nils Karsten, Jutta Koether and Shanna Zentner. The painters in this show share an interest in a luscious and sophisticated painting surface. They seem to take a direct pleasure in the act of painting itself, creating works in which the looseness of the brushstrokes interact dialectically with the figuration. The melancholic mood of the paintings is in stark contrast with the richness of their texture, creating a fascinating tension.

Skyler Brickley's paintings and watercolors of nocturnal scenes have a romantic quality with vivid colors and moody atmospheres. Skyler Brickley is currently completing his MFA at Yale University.

Francesca DiMattio's energetic paintings depict chaotic environments where seemingly incongruous elements coexist and spurts of luscious color enhance the compositions. She creates a dynamism that alters the spatial planes and conveys the sense that the painting is collapsing unto itself. After receiving her BFA from Cooper Union, Francesca Di Mattio is completing her MFA at Columbia University.

Nils Karsten's compelling large paintings seduce the viewer with their loose and robust brushstrokes while capturing the psychological intensity of the portraits. A graduate from SVA, Nils Karsten recently received a MFA from the Vermont College of Arts. He had his first solo show "60 Seconds in Heaven" at Marvelli Gallery in March 2004.

Jutta Koether's delicate and transparent paintings create ethereal and melancholic compositions balanced between figuration and abstraction. Her work was recently exhibited at the Frankfurter Kunstverein (Frankfurt) and Galerie Daniel Buchholz (Cologne).

Shanna Zentner's lush paintings portray simple, everyday scenes, energized by fluid, sensitive brushstrokes. Shanna Zentner recently graduated from Cooper Union.
