 The Little Sister II, 2006 acrylic on canvas, 17 x 17 inches Patrick Wilson The Chandler Paintings Los Angeles painter Patrick Wilson opens an installation of new paintings at Brian Gross Fine Art. Long influenced by Los Angeles and mid-century modernism, Patrick Wilson continues his abstract explorations of the visual experience of light, space, color and time. In this series of works, "The Chandler Paintings," the artist has named each piece after a different Raymond Chandler novel or short story, paying homage to the writer's depiction of the city. The exhibition includes twelve new paintings, acrylic on canvas, ranging in size from 17 inches square to over 7 feet high. The sensation of the unique skies of Los Angeles can be felt in these paintings as the artist carefully calibrates the color to recreate the visual effects of atmosphere. Compositionally, these paintings are more complex than Wilson's previous minimalist works, and the elaborately layered colors of acrylic paint vibrate through subtle hue shifts and juxtapositions. As Patrick Wilson states, "I want the paintings to seduce the casual viewer like a smog-induced sunset. I'd like them to reverberate with the tension, anxiety and rhythm of rush hour traffic." Patrick Wilson was born in Redding, California in 1970. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Davis in 1993 and his M.F.A. from the Claremont Graduate School in 1995. Wilson has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in California, New York and Washington D.C. His work is in public and private collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art, The Edythe and Eli Broad Collection, Los Angeles, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., Capital Group, Inc., Los Angeles, and Creative Artists Agency, Beverly Hills.
