 Installation view at the Kerlin Gallery Paul Winstanley The Kerlin Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Paul Winstanley. Paul Winstanley is a painter whose commitment to the traditional categories of the still life, the interior and the landscape is allied with an acknowledgement of the centrality of the photographic image to contemporary life. At once methodical and melancholic, his painterly depictions of landscapes, deserted passages, lobbies and walkways, of empty college TV lounges and anonymous interview rooms, are generally rendered in a muted palette reminiscent of a blurred black-and-white snapshot. There is a sense of imposed order as well as an atmosphere of abandonment or expectation about these spaces of fleeting transit, or at best temporary occupation. Underneath the umbrella title "Homeland", Paul Winstanley presents a new group of paintings that construct a fictional iconography of the contemporary environment. The interiors "Walkway 1" and "Walkway 2" represent a utopian, urban night-time vista of brutal perspectives and infinitely reflected fluorescent lights. The paintings "Birch 1" and "Birch 2" present images of equal singularity though imbued with a shameless bucolic symbolism. Only in the paintings "Little Finland 1" and "Little Finland 2", is a sense of almost cinematic narrative almost discernible in these images of buildings and parked cars glimpsed through gaps in a wooded copse; a roadside stop on the edge of the wilderness. Winstanley has been exhibiting since the late 1970s and over the past decade he has had regular solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Munich and New York. His one-person exhibition "Driven Landscapes" 1993 was at Camden Arts Centre in 1993. Another solo show, "Annexe", in 1997-98, formed part of the Tate Gallery's Art Now series. He has participated in many group shows including the Whitechapel Open and the John Moore's Exhibition, each on several occasions, "Made in London" (1998) at the Musea di Electricade, Lisbon, "Postcards on Photography" which toured Britain in 1998/99, and "Landscape", which toured various venues in Germany, Russia and Italy in 2000. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, the British Council, the European Parliament, the New York City Public Library and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
