Paula Kane

Emily Tsingou Gallery is pleased to announce the second one-person exhibition of British painter Paula Kane.

Paula Kane paints imaginary landscapes which are largely inspired by the history of painting and its many representational, and at times forgotten, languages.

The exhibition consists of new paintings which evoke a shared memory of place, experienced as a fusion of contemporary visual culture, the history of painting known through museums and reproductions, and our immediate engagement with the "real world". Deriving elements from a diverse stock of visual references, the artist splices together remote realities to depict vistas which are generally reminiscent, but specifically unknowable and impossible as they only co-exist as a construct in the mind of the viewer.

The paintings are charged with contradictions: fusing pastural landscapes depicted on food packaging with elements of old-master paintings; tableaux which anticipate action, yet in their ambiguity of meaning, are chillingly devoid of narrative; landscapes which seem at first benign and fecund, fraught by a peculiarity and sinister foreboding; a compositional fullness displaced with atmospheric emptiness; traditional and contemporary, sublime and picturesque co-existing within the same image.

Running the risk of complete failure, the paintings combine different perspectives, forming a pastiche of high and low cultural sources, playfully arranging them without reverence to source. These fragmented and disparate elements form a landscape which seems familiar and believable, yet the only "reality" is that of received languages, genre and aesthetics, which stand as indexical markers to our cultural tourism.

Since graduating from Goldsmiths college in London, Paula Kane has had solo shows at Musee des Beaux Arts de Mons, Belgium, 2003; Galleri Wallner, Malmo, Sweden, 2000; Galerie Zurcher, Paris, France, 1999. Her work has also been shown at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; Bloomberg Space, London; The Jerwood Gallery, London, UK; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, UK; Oliver Kamm 5BE Gallery, New York, USA; The British School at Rome, Italy.
