, Jessica Backhaus, Michal Chelbin, Lee Miller, Vee Speers

"Portraits" brings together five international female photographers, represented by the Print Sales Gallery, who approach portraiture in very different ways. The exhibition introduces the work of three emerging talents: Lili Almog, Jessica Backhaus and Michal Chelbin, alongside the work of Lee Miller and Vee Speers.

Lili Almog's (Israel / lives and works New York, USA) series "Perfect Intimacy" is a passionate study of Carmelite nuns photographed during 2004-2005 exploring archetypal female representation. These works are drawn from the larger Photogallery touring exhibition "Sisters".

Jessica Backhaus (Germany) will show "Jesus and the Cherries", for the first time in the UK, a study of the domestic traditions and personalities of the small countryside village of Netno in Poland taken during 2001-2004.

Michal Chelbin (Israel) was nominated for the "Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize" at The National Portrait Gallery in 2005. She offers a compelling series of portraits of circus performers entitled "Lazarova" photographed in Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, taken between 2000-2002 as well as a new body of work featuring portraits of small-town performers entitled "Strangely Familiar", taken in England, Israel, Russia and Ukraine between 2003-2005.

Vee Speers (Australia) exhibits her eccentric new series "Parisians", taken between 2003-2006. Speers produced the series as Fresson carbon prints: a unique 19th-century hand-worked technique using a direct charcoal process with a sumptuous painterly quality.

Platinum and silver-gelatin prints from the archives of Lee Miller (USA) are also for sale, focusing on Miller's iconic portraits of Picasso to celebrate the launch of the publication "Visiting Picasso" by Thames & Hudson, and the availability of a rare set of all 20 portraits of the artist.
