Raymond Pettibon

Regen Projects is pleased to announce a new exhibition of drawings by Raymond Pettibon. One of the most influential artists to emerge from southern California, Pettibon's drawings pull freely from a range of sources including music, politics, religion, art history, sex, sports, movies, and comic books. His thematic range is increasingly topical, addressing current political concerns and events. Pettibon's work is generally characterized by a profuse output of monochromatic graphic-style drawings done in ink on paper, sometimes mixed with crayon, pencil, or watercolor and usually incorporating text borrowed from literature and other sources or original text written by the artist. In recent years, Pettibon's style has become more fluid and expansive, resulting in room-size wall drawings and installations.

Raymond Pettibon's work has been the subject of several major exhibitions throughout Europe, Asia, and the U.S. Two large surveys of Pettibon's drawings will be held this year at the CAC Malaga, Spain and the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna. Recent solo exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Museion-Museo D'Arte Moderno e Contemporanea, Bolzano, Italy; MACBA, Barcelona, Spain; and the MAK Center, Vienna, Austria. Pettibon was the recipient of the 2004 Bucksbaum Award awarded by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; the 2001 Wolfgang-Hahn-Prize awarded by the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, Germany; and the 1991 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Awards in Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography, and Craft Media.

A new artist's book, "Turn to the Title Page", was produced in conjunction with Pettibon's recent exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Monographs of Pettibon's work have been published by the Museo d'arte moderna e contemporanea Bolzano, Bolzano, Italy; the MACBA, Barcelona, Spain; Phaidon, New York; Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Koln and D.A.P., New York; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Renaissance Society, Chicago.
