Rebecca Morris
straight to hell

Samson Projects presents "Straight to Hell," the first Boston solo exhibition of Rebecca Morris. The exhibition comprises four strong paintings: three large-scale works on canvas in oil and spray paint, one on linen. A collage and a small triangle shaped canvas complete the exhibition.

With subtly masterful and complex use of color and texture, Morris creates charged works. Shapes, lines and shadow form and reform in dynamic configurations subverting formal principles.

"Black and Brown: that shit is the future." - from the artist's manifesto.

WYSIWYG stresses the way her paintings are made to be very important. An acronym for What You See Is What You Get, in computing, is used to describe a system in which content during editing appears very similar to the final product. Synesthetics help us appreciate the works with every sense.

Preoccupations with single ideas and thoughts are disgraced along with the literal. Her work is set with, along and against a bevy of artistic traditions (Suprematist, De/Constructivist, Modernist, Neo-Geo and more)... allusion and reference work for her.

Rebecca Morris (Honolulu, 1969) grew up in Branford, Connecticut. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Morris received her B.A. from Smith College (91), her M.F.A. from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (94) and attended The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (94). She was recently a resident artist at the Djerassi Program in Woodside, CA (05). Morris has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Barbara Weiss, Berlin (06), The Renaissance Society, Chicago (05), The Santa Monica Museum of Art (03) and Shane Campbell in Oak Park, IL (01). She received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award (99) and grants from The Durfee Foundation (05), Art Matters (96) and the Illinois Arts Council (96).
