Cellulose on panel, 48 inches in diameter (122 cm) Richard Hamilton Products Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Richard Hamilton. Hamilton has long been interested in the relationships and distinctions between fine art, product design and popular culture, most famously analysed in the Independent Group discussions at the ICA during the 1950s with Reyner Banham, Lawrence Alloway and others. Hamilton’s latest work is "Table with Ashtray" (2002), produced in a small edition. The new table is related to Hamilton's focus on populated rooms and interiors, and is thereby connected to his "Lux 50" (1979) a painting that is also a functioning hi-fi system, and OHIO and Infowell computer designs. The exhibition also includes classic works of Hamilton's from the 1960s, "Epiphany" (1967), "Still-Life", "Study" (1965) and "Toaster" (1966-67). Some of these works have never been seen in London. Richard Hamilton (b. 1922) has recently had museum exhibitions devoted to his illustrations of James Joyce's Ulysses at the British Museum, his "Complete Prints 1939-2002" at Kunstmuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), and his notes on Duchamp's Large Glass at Philadelphia Museum of Art, and his "Collaborations" with Dieter Roth at Museum Serralves, Porto. A definitive retrospective exhibition, curated by Vicente Todoli, opens at MACBA, Barcelona in February 2003 and travels to the Ludwig Museum, Köln. Hamilton is also included in the Tate Triennial, Days Like These, 27 February - 26 May 2003.
