Sarah Malakoff

Plane Space is delighted to present new photographs from Sarah Malakoff.

Continuing her investigation into the tension of presence and absence through the documenting of domestic interiors, Malakoff presents here a new body of photographs. Psychologically charged, the living spaces, often her own or found through family or friends, are almost entirely unaltered by the artist. At most, in setting up her shot, she will remove some of the everyday clutter to pare a room's contents down to the existing objects and pieces of furniture. Entirely devoid of people, the photographs set up varying relationships between a room's components (sofa to table, wallpaper to lamp, etc.), as well as different moods created by both natural and artificial lighting. As a result, the images beck on the viewer to visually traverse the spaces and decipher a narrative. Each fixture of the room is encoded with different associations for each person. From the definitive realities of these spaces stem a wide range of fictions created by that of the viewer.

Sarah Malakoff received her M.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has exhibited her photographs and earlier film works extensively in her native state of Massachusetts, as well as in California, Maine, and New York. Among her awards, Malakoff has received an Artist Grant in Photography from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Juror Prize at the PRC Members' Exhibition at the Photographic Resource Center in Boston, and the Jury Award at the Film and Video Annual at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She presently teaches at the Maine College of Art in Portland and her work was recently accepted for the 2007 Portland Museum of Art Biennial Exhibition.
