Primeval Systems

Plane Space is delighted to present "Primeval Systems", Shiri Mordehchay's second solo exhibition at the gallery.

Mordechay, working predominately with ink on paper (and various other media affixed to the surfaces), creates fantastical drawings of psychologically charged imagery. For this exhibition, her first since completing her M.F.A., Mordechay accompanies smaller autonomous pieces with larger sculptural, installation-based works, all of which are sutured and bound with thread, wire, hair and tape. Incredibly labor intensive, these pieces are meticulously rendered, both beautiful and revolting in their excess.

The subject matter is a conglomeration of surreal elements woven together to create a scene of fragility and abrasiveness that taps into the unconscious. Configurations of skulls, computers, a swimming pool, baboons, guns, erections, bodily fluids, theater seats, gaming tables and countless figures in varying degrees of dismemberment - compose only a small fraction of these extremely delicate and transgressive works.

Born in Israel and raised in Nigeria, Mordechay now lives in New York City, where she received her M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts this past spring. Prior to moving here, Mordechay lived in San Francisco where she earned her B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. She also studied fine arts at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. In addition to a number of group exhibitions in California and New York, Mordechay was recently included in "Phantasmania" at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City.
