Shubucks Arbeiten wurden bereits in der von Galerie Bob van Orsouw organisierten Gruppenausstellung "Through The Looking Glass", 2006 vorgestellt. Nun bestreitet die Künstlerin zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz eine Einzelpräsentation in den neuen Räumen von Suzie Q. Gezeigt werden u.a. mittelformatige Zeichnungen sowie lose Blätter, die von Shubuck über einen längeren Zeitraum angefertigt und zu einer Art Kompendium in einer Box zusammengefügt wurden. Um den Inhalt dieser Box für den Betrachter zugänglich zu machen, legt Shubuck die Blätter auf ihrem aus dem New Yorker Studio importierten Arbeitstisch aus, der über Jahre hinweg selbst zum Träger von Zeichnungen und Kritzeleien geworden ist. In Shubucks imaginären Welten tummeln sich Fabelwesen und beseelte Gegenstände. Florale Ornamente und Arabesken verdichten sich zu phantastischen Welten in subtiler Kolorierung. Die einzelnen Bildelemente, ihre Proportionen und ihr Bezug zueinander sind assoziativ, alogisch und wirken wie spontane Setzungen. Immer wieder wird die spiralförmige und labyrinthische Anordnung von Shubucks Bildwelten von Symmetrien durchbrochen. Zahlen, Gedanken- und Wortfragmente werden als kalligraphische Elemente eingefügt. Shubuck bringt verschiedene Techniken und Materialien zur Anwendung, wie Collage, Gouache, Ölmalerei, Tusch- und Farbstiftzeichnung. Die unschuldig wirkenden Szenarien, die Jugendstil und orientalische Ornamentik gleichermassen in Erinnerung rufen, entpuppen sich bei näherem Hinsehen oft als bissig-ironische Kommentare, in denen sich das Clowneske mit dem Abgründigen paart. Her works had previously been introduced to Switzerland at the Galerie Bob van Orsouw in the group exhibit "Through The Looking Glass", 2006. Now the artist is holding the Swiss stage for the first time with a solo presentation in the new Suzie Q space. What is being shown is medium-sized drawings, as well as works on loose-leaf paper that have been produced over a longer period of time and assembled in a box to a kind of compendium. In order to make the contents of the box accessible to viewers, Shubuck spreads the sheets of paper over the worktable imported from her New York studio, which has, over time, itself become the support for her drawings and doodles. Fabulous creatures and animated objects frolic in Shubuck's imaginary landscapes. Floral ornaments and arabesques are condensed into fantastic, subtly colored worlds. The individual pictorial elements, their proportions and their relationships to each other are associative, a-logical, their effect like spontaneous postulations. Symmetries break up the spiral-formed and labyrinthine arrangement of Shubuck's picture worlds. Numbers, thoughts and word fragments are inserted like calligraphic elements. Shubuck makes use of different techniques and materials, such as collage, gouache, oils, ink and colored-pencil drawing. A closer look at the seemingly innocent scenarios, which recall both Jugendstil and oriental ornamentation, often reveals them to be, in fact, bitingly ironic commentary that couples the clownish with the unfathomable.
