Stéphane Couturier

Stéphane Couturier photographs building sites all over the world that, except for the vegetation or lack of it, could be anywhere - in the world. His vision is not about the specificity of place as much as an investigation of the relationship between the different focal points of the picture. The anonymity of some of the partially built structures and the homogeneity of architecture in others offer few points of destinction or aesthetic interest. Rather, the structures, construction sites, and backgrounds become geometric details in the larger scene that is more visually coherent as a whole entity. Only when considered in this way do the details come alive, giving the photographs a sense of almost geometric beauty and balance.

Stéphane Couturier has exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. His work is included in many museum collections, including: Musee d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Luxembourg; National Gallery, Washington, DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg, France; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
