Stephen Ellis

Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Stephen Ellis.

In his new paintings, Stephen Ellis returns to abstraction after employing text as image in his previous exhibition. If these new abstractions reprise motifs familiar from earlier bodies of work - syncopated grids, dessicated calligraphy - they further develop ideas introduced in the text pieces. Most striking of these is a shift away from architectonic frontality toward a greater transparency; the architecture remains, but it is now submerged in veils of color. Grids persist, but the painterly incidents that interrupt them are arranged in freer, sprung rhythms.

Stephen Ellis's paintings appear in numerous public and private collections across the United States and Europe, including the Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Fonde Nationale Art Contemporain (FNAC) in France.

This exhibition marks the artist’s eleventh one-person show in New York and his eighth with the Gallery.
