Stephen Roach

Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition of photographs by Stephen Roach.

Primarily using his own family as models, Stephen Roach constructs a reality of intimacy in his photographs. Rather than narrate a specific story, Roach uses his camera to photograph a distinct feeling that conveys intimacy despite its artificial construction. Roach has referred to his art as "Transient Narratives," where each individual photograph as well as an entire body of work clearly hints at a story, if only a fleeting one. This effect is achieved through the combining of photographs, sometimes quite disparate or unrelated, to create a single image with a singular tone. The result is often a moment of confusion wherein the viewer tries to decipher the single image, before realizing that the component images do not gel perfectly. It is this sense of suspension of disbelief surrounding an intimate or private action, which Roach seeks to achieve. It is then up to the viewer to determine how the narrative of the overall picture plays out.

Conditioned to believe what we see, Roach's photographs allow the viewer to both believe in something and also see the artifice of how it is made. Influenced by this very phenomenon in film, Roach's work certainly speaks to a particular cinematic quality. It is poetry and music, however, which Roach sites as an even greater influence for his art. The photographs achieve the same sense of harmony and timelessness or "pitch of feeling" that can be found in beautiful poetry or music.

Originally from Australia, Roach has lived and worked in Italy since 1982. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions in Rome, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Sydney. His photographs are in the permanent collections of major museums including the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, Australia; the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, the Centre George Pompidou, Paris; and the Neederlandse Kunstichting, Amsterdam.
