 Personal Encounters In Your Imagination (Detail) Stephen Willats Personal Encounters In Your Imagination Click for English text Seit Mitte der 60er Jahre ist Stephen Willats (*1943) einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der progressiven Kunstszene in England. Für viele junge, aber auch für viele etablierte Künstler ist sein Werk in den letzten Jahren wegweisend gewesen. Denn Willats war einer der Ersten, der in seinen Fotos, Filmen und Videos mit interaktiven Methoden und dem Einbezug von "normalen" Menschen in seine künstlerische Wahrnehmung urbaner Realitäten gearbeitet hat. Dabei hat er stets sowohl die kommunikativen Prozesse der Menschen untereinander, als auch die ständige Zunahme von Zeichen und Symbolen, von denen diese umgeben sind, in den Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit gestellt. Im Laufe seiner langen und aussergewöhnlich erfolgreichen Kariere hat Stephen Willats seine Arbeiten in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen im In- und Ausland gezeigt. Seitdem die Galerie Reinhard Hauff im Jahre 1995 mit einer Ausstellung des Künstlers eröffnet hat, stellt sie seine Arbeiten regelmässig aus. In "Personal Encounters in Your Imagination" befasst sich Willats erneut mit dem Aspekt des Zufalls, der sein gesamtes Werk durchzieht. Dabei interessieren ihn die möglichen Strukturen und Konstellationen, die sich aus zufälligen Begegnungen und Ereignissen ergeben. In seiner Arbeit werden daher häufig all die Nebensächlichkeiten dokumentiert, die uns so banal und alltäglich vorkommen, dass wir sie schon gar nicht mehr wahrnehmen. In "It's rubbish", 2000, inventarisiert er beispielsweise in einer grossen Fotomontage den gesamten Müll, den er in einem brachliegenden Grundstück in London aufgesammelt hat. In "Personal Encounters In Your Imagination" zeigt Stephen Willats seine neuesten Arbeiten und Arbeiten auf Papier aus den 90er Jahren wie etwa die "Conceptual Towers series", deren architektonische und skulpturale Elemente an seine früheren fotografischen Aufnahmen erinnern. Einige der in der Ausstellung gezeigten Filme und Videos, wie etwa das 8 mm-Stilleben seiner Glas- und Keramiksammlung aus den 60er Jahren, werden zudem in der Ausstellung zum ersten Mal überhaupt gezeigt. He continues to be an inspiration and cult figure among young and established artists. Willats has pioneered the use of interactive methods (photo, film, video) and the involvement of ordinary people in his perception and presentations of urban reality, and the way we communicate with each other - or are being communicated at through the proliferation of signs and symbols all around us. Throughout his long and distinguished career he has had numerous solo and group shows both at home and abroad and he has exhibited regularly at the Galerie Reinhard Hauff since the gallery opened with a Stephen Willats show in 1995. "Personal Encounters In Your Imagination" takes up a theme Willats continues to explore and to which much of his art is dedicated – that of the element of chance. Willats is intrigued by the possible structure and organisation in chance events and encounters. In his rigourous way of working systems are carefully designed to document that which appears incidental or is often so banal that we have become totally blind to it. Willats' form language is totally unique. Whether he works in colourful vinyl as in the "Multiple Clothig" pieces from the 70's and reworked again in the 90's, with 8 milimeter films: a woman walking through an eerie tunnel, bridges leading into nowhere, or still-life's of 60's glass and ceramics collections, with photography and montages featuring scenes of urban life, from post war East German apartment blocks, to the London subway. "Personal Encounters In Your Imagination" presents some of Stephen Willats' latest work, as well as pieces from the 1990's, including works on paper (pencil ink and gouache) from the "Conceptual Towers" series, where architectural and sculptural elements reminiscent of Willats' photos are featured.
