A Survey of Contemporary Paintings and Works on Paper

Frank Bernarducci and Louis K. Meisel are pleased to announce the opening of their spring exhibition, "New Paintings; a Group Survey of Contemporary Paintings". Artists to be featured in the exhibition include Roberto Bernardi, Paul Caranicas, Hilo Chen, David Dewey, Charles Jarboe, Raphaella Spence, Jock Sturges, Susan Sykes, Bernardo Torrens, and Mark Workman.

"Dimensioni Sovrapposte", by Roberto Bernardi, is an appetizing still life of glass jars filled with an array of colorful candies and gum balls. This eye catching assortment epitomizes Bernardi's style through the dramatic use of reflection and texture. Similar techniques, while more subdued, are present also in the work of David Dewey. In "Sole Mooring", Dewey captures the fleeting, hazy light of the New England coast, evoking an atmosphere of quiet and peaceful simplicity. Mark Workman demonstrates a similar style in his acrylic works on paper. In "Crossing Paths", his use of such rich yet muted tones evokes an unparallel vista of nature at its most serene.

Also featured in this exhibition are new urban landscape paintings by Charles Jarboe, Susan Sykes, and Raphaella Spence. Jarboe's "59th Street Bridge" is an enchanting scene of New York's Midtown neighborhood on a spring afternoon. The artist's understanding of structure and form along with his innate attention to detail, color, and light combine to form these intimate snapshots of urban life.

Completing the exhibition are figurative works by Hilo Chen, Jock Sturges, and Bernardo Torrens. Chen extends his "New Beach Paintings" series one more step in "Beach 155". By selecting only a fragment of the female form to represent, in this case the bust and torso of a young woman, he designates this as the immediate focus of the painting. This unique technique applied to the human figure is what predominantly attracts the viewer to his paintings.
