 Stellage, 2002 painting, oil on canvas 200 cm x 300 cm Thomas Huber Click for English text Eigentlich sind es gleich drei Ausstellungen, die Thomas Huber in seiner zweiten Ausstellung bei carlier | gebauer in Szene setzt. Jedes der drei grossformatigen Bilder zeigt einen möglichen Ausstellungsaufbau, eine Variante, eines oder mehrere Bilder in einer entsprechenden Architektur zu präsentieren. Die Bilder Thomas Hubers insistieren auf der Souveränität des Gemalten. Sie eröffnen fiktive Räume, in welchen sich der Künstler selbst präsentiert und in welche er gleichzeitig den Betrachter einlädt, sich hinein zu versetzten. Eine Identifikation mit dem Imaginären, die auf diese Art in surrealistischer Tradition steht. Bild und Sprache sind eng miteinander verbunden und der Bildraum wird zum Bühnenraum. Hubers Arbeiten sind immer wieder neue Argumente für die konkreten Möglichkeiten der Bilder. Es ist das bislang über 20 Jahre währende Projekt des Künstlers. Indeed, each of these three large scale pieces shows diverse ways of constructing space for display, the possibility of presenting one or more paintings with their own specific architecture. The works by Huber insist upon the sovereignty of the picture. They open up fictional rooms where the artist is able to present himself and where the viewer is also invited to immerse himself in Huber’s creative world. This way of identification with the imaginary is in the line of the best Surrealist tradition. Image and word are tightly linked together and the space of the painting turns into a theatrical site. Huber’s works are again and again new arguments for the concrete possibilities of painting, a central concern which has guided his artistic projects for the last 20 years. |
