 Fotografie: Osama Dawod Thomas Isler Orientalisches Café Click for English text Die Videoinstallation "Orientalisches Café" rekonstruiert das Kairoer Townhouse-Café, in dem der Dokumentarfilmer Thomas Isler über mehrere Wochen mit anwesenden Gästen Gespräche über 9/11 filmte. Von der Frage nach ihrer persönlichen Erfahrungen am Tag der Anschläge, wechseln die Gespräche zu den ökonomischen und sozialen Auswirkungen die diese auf die Alltagssituation der Interviewten hatten. Das Townhouse Café selbst, seine Bedeutung als Ort der Reflektion und des Austausches, bildet ein weiteres zentrales Thema der Gespräche. Der Transfer von Mobiliar aus dem Townhouse Café ergänzt die in den Interviews entworfene "oral history" mit der Rekonstruktion der Rahmenbedingungen der Interviews. Dadurch verbindet die Installation die im Titel der Ausstellung hergestellte Referenz auf die in vergangenen Jahren auch in Zürich zunehmend verbreiteten orientalischen Cafés mit der Reflektion der dokumentarischen Praxis. Die Installation sucht nach Rezeptionsmöglichkeiten die sich zwischen den alltäglichen Nachrichtenmeldungen und europäischer (Orient)-Exotik ergeben können. Dieser Frage will auch das Rahmenprogramm der Ausstellung nachgehen: An vier aufeinander folgenden Mittwochabenden werden Gäste persönliche Reiseberichte vorstellen und versuchen, eine zeitgenössische Variante des klassischen Formats zu entwerfen: Mittwoch, 24. Thomas Isler Oriental Cafe The video installation "Oriental Café" reconstructs the Cairo Townhouse-Café, where documentary filmmaker Thomas Isler spent several weeks filming conversations on 9/11 with guests in the coffee shop. From the inquiry about their personal experiences on the day of the attacks, the conversations quickly changed to the economic and social implications they had on their every day. The Townhouse-Café and its significance as a space of reflection and discourse, make for another important topic of the conversations. Through the actual transfer of furniture from the Townhouse Café to the exhibition space, the installation connects the reconstruction of the conditions of production of the interviews to the "oral history" sketched out in the videos. By doing so, the title of the shows' reference to Zurich's increasingly common Oriental Cafes, connects to the installations reflection on documentary practice in itself. The installation aims to develop a reading between the daily news and European (orient)-exoticism.
