Tilo Baumgartel

We are pleased to present the first solo show in London by Tilo Baumgartel, who is one of a group of young Leipzig painters attracting much attention at the moment.

The show will include new paintings and drawings. Tilo Baumgartel's work has a dreamlike quality - strange surreal scenarios are played out in imaginary landscapes that seem frozen in time. The works often have a suggested narrative, a recurring theme seems to be a fear of inertia, being stuck and remaining stranded (stranded boats, snowed in houses, driverless locomotives). The acid/luminous colours he uses such as, bright pink and blue, chrome oxide green, sulphurous yellow, make the time of day unidentifiable and the play on scale and perspective "giant insects" or "oversize birds" add a hallucinatory/nightmarish quality.
