Very successful and respected in Europe and Australia, Maguire's work melds digital image-making techniques with a painterly process, the two coming together with striking results that encourage a dialogue between the photographic and the abstract. Even more ambitious in scale and complexity than his work previously shown here, these paintings are an impressive continuation of Maguire's signature practice. Using color separations from his own photographs of plant life as guides, Maguire applies successive layers of paint to reconstruct and reinterpret the images on canvas. The paintings are smooth, at first glance resembling mechanically reproduced photographs. Upon closer inspection though, their purity is broken by the clear presence of the artist's hand, their surfaces interrupted by brushstrokes, sprays of solvent and abstract painterliness. This contrast, coupled with imagery combining vibrant life with hints of decay, as well as his process of breaking down digital images to then reconstruct them in paint, demonstrates more explicitly than ever Maguire's extraordinary ability to fuse image and technique to address issues of image deconstruction and reconstruction, and, seen in a larger context, issues of life, death and creation. Tim Maguire has exhibited extensively in Australia and Europe for over two decades. His work is held by virtually every Australian museum and is included in major public and private collections throughout Europe. Later this month, Piper Press will release "Tim Maguire", a monograph on the artist, and, in early 2008, the British museum Ikon Gallery, will exhibit his large scale digital prints.
