Entitled "This", Kube presents a deeply introspective focus upon painting and its ability to collapse the illusion of the image into an uncanny form. "This" is then an expression and experience of the object; an exhibition that follows with a range of forms from wall-based pieces to sculpture. "This" stands as a conundrum: how is the image indexical, able to point at something, and offer that in an appearance? But what occurs when the appearance of the thing, the pictured subject, is obscured to the point of its denial for presentation? Does the indexical act of pointing out become focused upon itself, and in turn make the act an object in itself, an "arrested-perception?" These are some key questions that echo throughout Kube's conceptual inspiration drawn from philosophical studies in perception, namely from phenomenology. Theoretically influencing his careful approach to painting, he elaborates upon painting's various properties to the degree that even its definition and arena no longer seem to allow for a comfortable distance involved in viewer-ship, that apparatus that distinguishes viewer from the implied object. And so, in order to communicate how the enfolding, or collapse of material into illusion occur, and vice-versa, what is announced is a new space - appropriately addressed perhaps through his diptych "The Third Space". The exhibition displays objects as such, as things. One way of looking at these works, either as sculpture or wall relief, is not to place them as secondary, but rather central to the (function of) resistance of/in painting; the more we look at what is in the picture, the more Kube achieves a relationship to the phenomenon of the object - and arguably the more this (thing) seems exaggerated from what it is. Folding the material and the illusion, Kube's pieces uphold a kind of obstacle, which we are less able to force an understanding of the work, and increasingly "motivating an opening upon a space of art, engaging the imagination - where we intermingle concept and thing inconclusively. Here, judgement is left at a kind of suspension, but only in so far as statements could be made about what we see, understand; nevertheless, we are still affirming that indiscernible area within the limitation of perception altogether." At such a point, if there is a sense of the uncanny it is hardly in the definition that involves the displacement of the familiar by the unfamiliar; as common as some of the spaces and materials presented by Kube's works seem we still have no affiliation to them, even if there is a relation to the everyday. What is uncanny is still the underlying disorientation, but the situations responsible for this are perhaps left by the repetition of both having the openness of the question, "where is this," repeated by the simultaneous an unsatisfactory answer... "this". Within the minimal devices, the strong economic language with which Kube uses, "This" presents an exhibition that offers a subtle experience of matter, and how it ever so slightly moves from the wall and consumes the viewing environment into a seductive and uncanny concrete-fiction.
