L'evoluzione tecnologica ha spinto ad un continuo adattamento e rimodellamento del paesaggio alle esigenze di sviluppo economico e sociale. La mostra "Updating Landscapes" si pone come obiettivo quello di analizzare, tramite una serie di progetti artistici, il tema dell'estetica della trasformazione del paesaggio e quindi del suo influsso sul contesto visivo in cui ci muoviamo nel quotidiano. Il paesaggio del Cantone Ticino, per la sua posizione geografica e la morfologia del suo territorio, ha subito fondamentali trasformazioni nel corso degli ultimi 50 anni. In particolare, lo sviluppo delle strutture viarie sull'asse nord-sud e lo sfruttamento delle sue risorse idriche per la produzione di elettricità hanno portato ad un continuo cambiameto fisico e, conseguentemente estetico, del paesaggio. In un ambiente - per sua natura piuttosto selvaggio - sono venute così ad integrarsi gigantesche infrastrutture architettoniche, che costituiscono una sorta di "update" del paesaggio, sia come valore oggettivo e pratico, che in senso estetico. Questo aggiornamento (o ammodernamento) risponde ad esigenze di crescita, dettate dal desiderio di sviluppo di una sociatà basata su valori come la mobiltà e lo sfruttamento delle risorse. Il primo passo verso un update paesaggistico viene costituito dai cantieri, cellula staminale per l'inserimento di architetture nel paesaggio. Questi, pur essendo degli elementi transitori, possono già essere considerati come degli innesti estetici di enorme impatto visivo, in un certo senso proprio come delle installazioni artistiche. Basti pensare al gigantesco cantiere della trasversale ferroviaria alpina (Alptransit) che al momento, e ancora per i prossimi decenni, si estende praticamente per decine di kilometri nell'alto Ticino e si espande sempre di più. L'idea base di "Updating Landscapes" prende spunto da questi stessi cantieri, che sono al momento uno dei fenomeni visivi più interessanti sul suolo ticinese. In un'ottica futura questi sono poi destinati ad avere un'influenza determinante sul "design" della regione, ma anche un influsso sulla mobilità e sull'economia nazionale ed internazionale. Il tema del paesaggio è naturalmente centrale nel corso della storia dell'arte. Negli ultimi anni si è potuto inoltre osservare un ritorno di interesse verso di esso da parte degli artisti contemporaeni. Allo stesso modo, l'architettura in tutti i suoi aspetti è un altro centro tematico principale dell'arte attuale. Gli artisti invitati a partecipare a "Updating Landscapes" pur distinguendosi per i media utilizzati (installazione, video, fotografia) trattano nel loro lavoro le tematiche sopra elencate. Essi sono Bob Gramsma (New York/Zurigo), Zilla Leutenegger (Zurigo), Aldo Mozzini (Camorino/Zurigo), Christoph Schreiber (Berlino/Zurigo) e il Gruppo Pragma (Ticino). All'interno della mostra essi saranno presenti con lavori in prevalenza appositamente realizzati o recentemente prodotti. Oltre alla sede del CACTicino, la mostra coinvolgerà direttamente lo spazio pubblico. Aldo Mozzini realizzerà infatti sulla Piazza del Sole di Bellinzona un'installazione fotografica, che coinvolgendo i "corpi emergentii" del parcheggio sotteraneo, attua una un'ulteriore scomposizione architettonica dello spazio urbano. Il CACTicino sarà inoltre ospite della fiera d'arte LISTE '03 di Basilea dal 16 al 22 giugno. In questa occasione, oltre agli artisti Katia Bassanini e Maurizio Bolognini, verrà presentata un'istallazione del Gruppo Pragma presente in "Updating Landscapes". "Updating Landscapes" mette l'accento attraverso progetti molto differenziati sull'idea della trasformazione del paesaggio, sia come elemento estetico che come processo. In questo senso la parola "cantiere" può venire considerata come una sorta di fil rouge nella mostra. In senso metaforico, l'arte stessa può essere definita, e del resto viene spesso così fatto, come cantiere: di nuove idee, di messaggi o di studio e sviluppo dell'estetica visiva. Questa metafora può sicuramente essere considerata come uno dei luoghi comuni o delle "frasi fatte" della critica d'arte. Ciononostante, non può essere negata una fascinazione dello spettatore di fronte sia all'arte che ai cantieri: questi rappresentano infatti due momenti di instabilità, di transizione e di spostamento dei significati. Il continuo desiderio di miglioramento delle infrastrutture e sfruttamento delle risorse, porta tuttavia ad un progressivo smantellamento del paesaggio naturale, spingendo la realtà data verso l'artificio. Così, come avviene nel caso dell'arte, il contesto visuale primario in cui ci muoviamo (paesaggio) può e forse addirittura deve essere letto in chiave di rappresentazione estetica, implicando quindi uno sforzo di interpretazione critica verso di esso. "Updating Landscapes" vuole fornire lo spunto per una riflessione su queste tematiche, in un momento storico in cui il paesaggio naturale ticinese si trova in una fase di ridefinizione fondamentale per il suo futuro. The technological evolution brought to a continuous remodelling and adaptation of the landscape for the needs of social and economic development. The exhibition "Updating Landscapes" aims, among its targets, to analyse through a series of artistic projects the theme of aesthetics in landscape transformation and its influence on visual context as far as our everyday life is concerned. The landscape of Canton Ticino, in consideration of its geographic position and territorial morphology, underwent fundamental transformations along the last 50 years. In particular the development of road structures North-South and the exploitation of its water resources for electricity production brought to a continuous physical and - consequently aesthetic - change of the landscape. In a quite naturally wild environment, you could assist to an integration of huge architectonic infrastructures, that set up a sort of landscape "update", both as objective and practical value and in an aesthetic way. Updating (or modernising) respond to growth needs, imposed by the development wish of a society based on values like mobility and resources exploitation. The first step toward a landscape update is made up by construction yards, vital cell for the introduction of architectures in the landscape. The construction yards, though the elements are transitory, can already be considered aesthetic clutches of enormous visual impact, in a certain way like artistic installations. It is enough to think of the huge construction yard of Alptransit, which now and for the next decades extends itself for kilometres in the Northern Ticino expanding itself more and more. The main idea of "Updating Landscapes" takes these construction yards as a starting point, that are for the time being one the most interesting visual phenomenon on cantonal territory. In a futuristic perspective their destination will be a determinant influence on the "design" of the region, but also the influence on mobility and on national and international economy. Of course, the theme of landscape is central within art history. In the last years you could also observe by contemporary artists a renewed attention toward it. In the same way, the architecture in all its aspects is another main thematic central point of view of current art. The artists invited to take part to "Updating Landscapes", even though they are different in terms of techniques (installation, video, photography) approach in their work the themes mentioned above. They are Bob Gramsma (New York/Zurich), Zilla Leutenegger (Zurich), Aldo Mozzini (Camorino/Zurich), Christoph Schreiber (Berlin/Zurich) and Gruppo Pragma (Ticino). For the exhibition the authors will feature works of art especially or recently produced. Beside the art centre, the show will directly involve the public space. Aldo Mozzini, in fact, will accomplish on the Piazza del Sole in Bellinzona a photographic installation. By using the architectural concrete forms of the car park, he will make a further architectural decomposition of the urban space. "Updating Landscapes" puts into evidence the idea of transformation through highly differentiated projects, both as aesthetic element and procedure. In this way the word "construction yard" could be considered like a sort of "fil rouge" in the exhibition. In a metaphoric sense - so it is quite frequently - art itself can be defined as construction yard: of new ideas, of messages or of visual aesthetics study and development. This metaphor can be surely considered as one of common place or common phrases of art critics. However, you can't deny a fascination of the spectator in front of both art and construction yards: these represent, in fact, two moments of instability, transition and change of significance. The continuous desire of infrastructures improvement and resources exploitation brings however to a progressive dismantling of the natural landscape, by pushing reality toward device. So, as it happens in art, the primary visual context in which we move (landscape) can and maybe also must be read like an aesthetic representation, implying an effort of critical interpretation toward it. "Updating Landscapes" aims to give the starting point for deliberation on these themes, in a historical moment, in which the natural landscape of Ticino goes through a period of fundamental redefinition for its future. "Updating Landscapes" enters in the programme Galleries 57/34.6 promoted by Pro Helvetia and has been possible thank the support of the Präsidialdepartement der Stadt Zürich, the Cassinelli-Vogel-Stiftung, BCL and Sarnafil SA.
