Januar 2008 öffnet die Galerie BolteLang in Zürich erstmals ihre Türen. "Empty Centres", die Eröffnungsausstellung, zeigt neue Arbeiten der beiden Schweizer Künstlerinnen Pamela Rosenkranz (lebt in Zürich) und Vanessa Billy (lebt in London). Im Vorfeld zur Ausstellung fand ein spontaner Austausch zwischen den beiden, sich bis dahin nicht kennenden Künstlerinnen statt. Gegenseitige Emails und Gespräche über ihre oft gegensätzlichen Arbeitsweisen und Werke - Rosenkranz's Arbeit ist konzeptuell, während Billy vorwiegend im Studio arbeitet - entwickelten einen interessanten Dialog. Das Resultat dieser Begegnung wird in "Empty Centres" zu sehen sein. Im ersten Jahr der Galerie werden, ähnlich der Eröffnungsausstellung, eine Reihe von Ausstellungen mit jeweils zwei Kunstschaffenden realisiert. Ihnen steht frei, ob sie die Räumlichkeiten in Kollaboration oder getrennt nutzen wollen, wobei die Galeristinnen den Dialog zwischen den sich vorher meist nicht kennenden Künstlern begrüssen. Die Herkunft der ausstellenden Künstlerinnen reflektiert auch den Werdegang der Galeristinnen Anna Bolte und Chaja Lang. Aufgewachsen in Zürich, wohnhaft in New York, Frankreich und vor allem London, verbrachten beide die letzten zehn Jahre im Ausland. Bolte schloss dort ihren M.A. in zeitgenössischer Kunst am Sotheby's Institute of Art ab und arbeitete in der Folge als Managerin der Dicksmith Gallery. Lang führte den Bloomberg SPACE und das Visual Art Sponsorships Programm der Firma, bevor sie den Posten der Kulturattachée an der Schweizer Botschaft in London übernahm. Ihr langjähriges Wirken in Londons Kulturszene führte Bolte und Lang zur Realisierung der gleichnamigen Galerie, mit dem Ziel internationale Künstler nach Zürich zu bringen. Weiter wollen Bolte und Lang den Raum durch Vorlesungen und öffentliche Veranstaltungen mit Künstlern und Kritikern einem breiten lokalen und internationalen Publikum öffnen und einen Austausch über zeitgenössische Kunst anregen. Die Räumlichkeiten in der Nähe des renommierten Löwenbräuareals werden eine Mischung von Ausstellungen, Projektionen, Performances und Happenings beherbergen. "Empty Centres", the inaugural exhibition, will show new works by the Swiss artists Pamela Rosenkranz (Zurich) and Vanessa Billy (London). In the run up to the show an exciting exchange between the two artists and their contrasting practices developed spontaneously - Rosenkranz's work is conceptually led while Billy is a studio-based sculptor. As well as giving both artists a platform in Zurich, "Empty Centres" will present the results of this dialogue. Following this two-person format, the gallery's first year will see a series of six exhibitions with mostly dual presentations. The often previously unacquainted artists will be at liberty to decide how to use the space, by either realising a joint exhibition or treating the main gallery and the gallery's project space as only nominally related environments. The accompanying press releases will echo these processes and continue the exchange between the invited artists. Anna Bolte and Chaja Lang, founders of BolteLang, grew up in Zurich and spent the past ten years in England, the USA and France. The pair met in London, where Bolte gained her MA in Contemporary Art from Sotheby's Institute of Art and then became gallery manager of Dicksmith Gallery, while Lang managed Bloomberg SPACE and the company's Visual Art Sponsorships and was until recently the Cultural Attachée at the Swiss Embassy in London. Their residence and engagement in London's cultural scene led Bolte and Lang to establish BolteLang, with the intention of bringing international artists to Zurich. As well as this international line of communication, it is the gallerists' intention to open their space to a wide international and local audience through events and talks by artists, critics and other speakers who can stimulate interesting discussions around contemporary art. The new exhibition space close to the Löwenbräuareal will allow the display of a variety of works including projections, performances and works in progress. In this Zurich art district BolteLang will not seek to follow fashion but be a site for experimentation, to be alert to and to foster new developments in international contemporary art.
