William Horner: The Open Plain, 2005
various materials

William Horner
Jan Mancuska

William Horner's work, "The Open Plain", toys with a variety Plain of pared down materials such as hardwood, wax, wire mesh and bronze. In a setting not unlike a scaled down tableau vivant, the different components of the work appear as a set of unfinished propositions within the vocabulary of sculpture. While figuring the moment and duration of its own setting-up, the composition unfolds a maelstrom of historical contexts within the locale of its own drama; a Brancusi endless column is laid flat and appears to serve as a garland or festoon to what could be a model reconstruction of Vito Acconci's "Seedbed" performance.

Jan Manuuska's practice investigates the possibility of "permanent critique", a process that implies an active relation to others and to the surrounding world. A Cup is made up of two parts; a slide projection of a cup inside an open cardboard box, and a wall drawing. The drawing is the result of a performance where a tree like system is generated by associations originating from the word "cup". Linguists have long asked whether true communication - a subjective and delicate thing - can ever be possible. Mancuska translates the question into a site that, while tangible enough, promises, in the mind's eye, to be forever under construction.
