Gezeigt werden neuen Arbeiten des 1971 in Peru geborenen und heute in Houston, Miami und New York lebenden Künstlers William Cordova. Eine raumfüllende Installation aus Holz, die mit intimen, farbigen Zeichnungen durchsetzt ist, ergibt den szenischen Ausgangspunkt von Cordovas Projekt "Pachacuti". Feingliedrige, kryptische Zeichnungen auf Rest-Materialien - von Cordova selbst als "Lumpenkunst" bezeichnet - erzählen eine Bildergeschichte, welche sich zwischen Umgangssprache und Inka-Kultur ansiedelt. Zweifellos geprägt von seiner eigenen, trans-kulturellen Biografie zielt diese private Ikonographie aber auf die tiefere Bedeutung von Landschaft, Sprache und Geschichte, wie sie eine Gesellschaft prägen. Dabei geht es Cordova um den Widerstand von Ausgegrenzten. Aber ebenso geht es ihm um vergessene Geschichten und um Verlorenes, das hinter dem Sichtbaren der Gegenwart wieder auftaucht und dieses mit letztlich Unantastbarem durchsetzt. "Pachacuti" ist ein Quechua Wort, mit welchem die Inkas die "auf den Kopf gestellte Welt" oder den Umsturz bezeichneten. William Cordova verbindet mit diesem Ausdruck den Widerstand eines Volkes, das von Aussenstehenden kolonialisiert wurde, aber gleichzeitig mit Entschlossenheit die eigene, marginalisierte Identität beibehielt. Die Installation "Pachacuti" der Zürcher Ausstellung ist ein Labyrinth und Cordovas Antwort auf das stete Wechselspiel von Fakten und Manipulationen, das bei jeder Konstruktion von Wahrheit am Werk ist. New works of the 1971 Peruvian born, Houston, Miami and New York-based artist will be on view. A room-filling, wooden installation, interspersed with intimate, coloured drawings, is the scenic starting point of Cordova's project "Pachacuti". Delicate, cryptic drawings on found paper - tagged by the artist as "Lumpen Art" - make a picture show bridging the vernacular and the Inca culture. Without doubt inspired by his own transcultural background, this personal iconography aims at the profound meaning of landscape, language and history as shaping society. Here, Cordova is interested in the rejected, but equally so in the forgotten and lost rising again from behind the realities of the present, yet ultimately sparing the former from being touched. "Pachacuti" is a Quechua word, used by the Inca to denote "the world turned upside down" or cataclysm. William Cordova associates with this the resistance of a people that, while colonised by invaders, succeeded in maintaining its own, marginalized identity. With the installation "Pachacuti" at the Zurich exhibition, Cordoba creates a labyrinth as a response to the complex array of facts and manipulation at work in constructing the truth.
