 Untitled (Memphis), 1973-1974 Vintage silver gelatin print, 10 x 8 in / 25.4 x 20.3 cm William Eggleston Precolor Cheim & Read is pleased to announce an exhibition of black and white photographs taken from 1960 to 1974 by William Eggleston. Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1939, Eggleston became seriously interested in photography in the early 1960's. Although he would ultimately be celebrated for his breakthrough work in color, his first photographs were in black and white. These works evidence a particular view of the world that give cars and other debris of contemporary culture the upper hand with humanity occupying an awkward and alienated place in the midst of it all. In these black and white photographs one is made to feel the affinity Eggleston has with his contemporary, Diane Arbus. One hundred of these photographs will be on view in the main galleries, along with a screening of Eggleston's Film "Stranded in Canton" from 1974 in the front gallery. A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition.
