Recent Paintings

In Yoon Lee's large-scale paintings she combines architectural and landscape elements with sweeping movement; in them she activates the space, as if with a tangible fourth dimension. From a distance the paintings are spontaneous amalgamations of structure and motion; up close they appear as abstractions. "I want the work to look facile and then if you look up close" you get "more information; about how it's made, what I'm thinking of, the mode of production," and how the images are developed, "as opposed to deceiving." (Lee, '08)

Using references as diverse as her own abstract drawings and photographs of various locations and structures, all scanned and processed through the computer, Lee composes complex hybrids of abstraction and representation. A sense of speed is central to the dynamic nature of the works. "Once I filter" references "through the digital interface I start focusing more on things like how fast is it going from here to there and how can I communicate that? [S]peed really came into my mind as a subject... when I introduced the digital interface into my process."

Lee has developed her own painting technique; she meticulously applies layer upon layer of acrylic paint using only fine-tipped squeeze bottles. This exhibition will consist of four paintings, ranging in size from seven by twenty feet to four by eight feet.

Yoon Lee received a BA from UC San Diego and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. This is her first New York one-person exhibition.
