Zoë Mendelson
In-patient

Launching its sixth season, Plane Space is delighted to present the work of Zoë Mendelson as the gallery's fifth annual summer artist-in-residence and the artist's New York debut.

Having arrived in New York in early July from London, Mendelson had the opportunity to create a series of collages and drawings before gaining full access to the gallery space for its dormant month of August to work on her site-specific installation. The exhibition will be the culmination of these flat works and the incredibly detailed and consuming wall drawings that fill much of the gallery's wall space. In addition, the artist has created a sculptural centerpiece that houses an old scroll feed fax machine. Through the course of the exhibition, Mendelson's will add to the other drawings in the show by periodically faxing drawings that will collect on the gallery floor. Like the drawings on the wall, these transmitted records will too be ephemeral.

Much of the imagery in the exhibition, titled "In-patient," associates the constructing of fictitious temporary states within psychosis with the temporal, detailed nature of Mendelson's drawing. In particular, Mendelson alludes to the (now also fictive) hysterical patient of early psychiatry and, with humor, links the drawing process and residency itself to behaviors of the committed. Compiled and collaged somewhat free-associatively, Mendelson's selection of imagery and symbology ranges - with dreamlike morphing - from exotic flowers, plants and birds to the erotic and phallic, to clunky outdated sonic equipment such as distortion pedals and polygraphs, out of which her fantasies seem to grow. The soft graphite spread out against the gallery's sterile white walls suits Mendelson's interests and imagery well, transforming the gallery into both clinical record and an archive of ecstatic meanderings.

Zoë Mendelson was born and raised in London. She received her M.A. from the Royal College of Art in 2000. Since completing school, Mendelson has shown extensively throughout Europe with solo exhibitions in Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Paris and Turin and additional participation in group shows in England, France, Ireland, Israel, and Wales. She is represented in Paris by Galerie Schleicher + Lange.
