Fredrik Söderberg
Call off Cthulhu

Milliken is pleased to announce Fredrik Söderberg's second show in the gallery. Coinciding with this exhibition is a two person presentation at Magasin 3 (Stockholm's Konsthall) which also opens on Thursday. This show, curated by Elisabeth Millquist, pairs Mr. Söderberg with early 20th century Swedish artist Carl Larsson who is famously known for the work Midvinterblot that now hangs in the National Museum in Stockholm.

Söderberg's gallery show of both watercolor and oil painted works represents an ambitious departure into a transcendental realm for the artist. The previous 2005 exhibition concluded with an oil work of displaced forms in a modernist construction entitled "Ragnarök". In Norse mythology the word refers to the final battle of the world and its eventual rebirth. Apropos of this new body of work that is a focused attempt at spiritual meanings that springs out of a world of chaos. If the artist finds inspiration in Carl Larsson, he quickly turns to Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky and Swedish painter Hilma af Klint for guidance that combine with 1960's psychdelia and the artist's own interests in contemporary music and the occult. This new series is so subtle and precise that one can comprehend the trans-like state required to create the color and form of each artwork.

Mr Söderberg graduated from Konstfack (Stockholm) in 2000. He has had solo exhibitions in Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. As well as the show at Magasin 3 with Carl Larsson, he has exhibited in New York City at Rental with Matti Kallioinen and Lisa Jeannin/Rolf Schuurmans this past January, in 2006 at the Galleri Pistolet Sofia, Bulgaria with Matti Kallionen, Christine Ödlund, Nils Edwardsson, Lisa Jonasson, Galleri De Praktijk, Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Galleri Glassbox, Paris France.
