Sie umfasst 177 Werke von 62 KünstlerInnen mit total 340 Fotografien. Die Künstlerliste liest sich wie ein "Who is Who" der zeitgenössischen Kunst und Fotografie. Der Hauptteil der Sammlung konzentriert sich auf die konzeptionelle Fotografie der sechziger und siebziger Jahre, mit Werken von Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Gordon Matta-Clark, Sigmar Polke, Sol LeWitt u.v.m. Ein zweiter Teil umfasst die medienreflexierende, postmoderne Fotografie der achtziger Jahre mit Werken von Barbara Bloom, Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman u.v.m. Die Ausstellung der "Jedermann Collection - Set 5 aus der Sammlung des Fotomuseum Winterthur" dokumentiert damit zentrale künstlerische Positionen des 20. Jahrhunderts, deren Wurzeln sich beispielsweise im Werk von Eugène Atget wieder finden, die aber auch für die heutige Generation noch prägend sind. Viele der Kunstwerke sind zeitnah zur Produktion und in ersten Präsentationen von Galerien und Kunstmuseen erstanden worden. Anfangs wurden die konzeptuellen Ansätze der Land- und Concept-Art mit Namen wie Hamish Fulton, Richard Long, Michael Heizer oder Robert Smithson verfolgt, im Weiteren sind dann einige der wichtigen Strömungen und Entwicklungen wie die Post-Modern Photography bis in die aktuelle Kunst mit Fotografie vertreten. Einen Schwerpunkt bilden die frühen 1980er Jahre, als eine junge Generation von Bildermachern auf die Bühne trat, die das Einwirken der Massenmedien wie Kino, Zeitschriften, Werbung usw. auf unsere Gesellschaft untersuchten und das Selbstverständnis von künstlerischer Fotografie grundlegend veränderten. Vertreterinnen der so genannten Pictures Generation wie Sarah Charlesworth, Annette Lemieux und Sherrie Levine waren mediale Bilderstürmerinnen, die mit ikonenhaften Bildgruppen in der Ausstellung präsentiert werden. Neben amerikanischen Positionen sind ausgewiesen viele internationale Künstler vertreten: Joseph Beuys, Victor Burgin, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Gilbert & George, Anselm Kiefer, Arnulf Rainer, Sigmar Polke. Der Sammler zeigt sich im Gespräch angetan: "Europeans like to think, I appreciate that very much!" Sicherlich ist in dieser diskursfreudigen Haltung eine Erklärung zu finden, warum dieses wichtige Konvolut fotografischer Arbeiten dem Fotomuseum Winterthur angeboten wurde und schlussendlich in Europa platziert werden konnte. The list of artists reads like a "Who's Who" of contemporary art and photography. The main part of the collection is focused on the conceptual photography of the 1960s and 70s, with works by Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Gordon Matta-Clark, Sigmar Polke, Sol LeWitt and many others. A second part comprises the media-reflecting, post-modern photography of the 1980s with works by Barbara Bloom, Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman and many others. This exhibition, "Jedermann Collection - Set 5 from the Fotomuseum Winterthur Collection" documents important 20th century artistic positions, whose roots may also be found in the work of Eugène Atget but which have nevertheless had a strong influence on today's generation. Many of the works of art are of recent origin and were acquired by galleries and art museums for first-time presentations. At the beginning, the emphasis fell on the conceptual principles of land and concept art with names like Hamish Fulton, Richard Long, Michael Heizer and Robert Smithson, and later on some of the important trends and developments such as post-modern photography right up to the topical art with photography were represented. The focus is on the early 1980s when a young generation of visual artists took the floor and explored the effects of the mass media such as the cinema, magazines, advertising etc. on our society and fundamentally altered the self-evidence of artistic photography. It seems certain that this discourse-inclined approach is why this important collection of photographic work was offered to the Fotomuseum Winterthur and finally found its home in Europe.
