Centrik Isler freut sich ausserordentlich, seinen Ausstellungsraum LIKEYOU.projects mit neuen Arbeiten der österreichischen Künstlerin Melli Ink zu eröffnen. LIKEYOU.projects führt das fort, was seit der Lancierung seiner Kunstplattform www.likeyou.com 1999 und seit 2003 mit derjenigen der LIKEYOU Artists community stetig gewachsen ist. Die virtuelle Präsenz von Künstlern und Künstlerinnen in der LIKEYOU Artists community umfasst zur Zeit über 150 nationale und internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die durch LIKEYOU.com zu fairen Konditionen eine optimal verlinkte Webpräsenz erhalten. Mit LIKEYOU.projects gibt Isler seinen LIKEYOU Artists und der kunstinteressierten Öffentlichkeit also eine weitere, bestens im Kunstgeschehen integrierte Plattform und mit dem Ausstellungsraum erstmals eine reale Bühne. So soll der kleine aber feine Raum an der Lavaterstrasse 75 denn auch primär ausgesuchten LIKEYOU Künstlerinnen und Künstler als Showcase für kuratierte Ausstellungen dienen. Als Auftakt eröffnet LIKEYOU.projects mit einer Rauminstallation der in Zürich und Berlin lebenden Künstlerin Melli Ink (1972). Die Künstlerin, welche am Central Saint Martins College in Art and Design in London studierte, und viele Jahre erfolgreich als Bühnenbildnerin in New York und London gearbeitet hat, schafft filigrane Objekte und Skulpturen aus Glas, welche sie stets in aufwändigen Rauminstallationen inszeniert. Melli Ink thematisiert mit ihrer Kunst auf eine sinnliche und taktile Weise die Frage nach den Möglichkeiten der Darstellung von Natur in der Bildenden Kunst als solche. Dabei bedient sie sich aber nicht etwa einem präzisen Vorbild in der Natur, sondern setzt ihre Beobachtungen bewusst an einem Punkt an, der die Ambivalenz zwischen wissenschaftlicher Darstellung, Illustration und Kunst bereits in sich trägt. Die Künstlerin, welche auch mit Performance und Video arbeitet, greift mit ihren gläsernen Skulpturen und Objekten ein idealisiertes Naturbild auf, wie es im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert in bürgerlichen Kreisen gepflegt wurde. In Anknüpfung an die romantische Naturforschung, die von einer Beseelung der Natur ausging, wurde das Erstaunen, die Emphase, vor die Erkenntnis und die wissenschaftliche Überprüfbarkeit gesetzt. Von Goethes Entwicklungsgesetz von Polarität und Steigerung beeinflusst, schien das Naturbild der bürgerlichen Klasse eine sich stets fortlaufende und auf einander beruhende Komplizierung aller Lebewesen zu sein, deren Erscheinungsformen unendliches Spektakel ihrer selbst als zugleich auch Spiegel der menschlichen Fantasie waren. Melli Inks Objekte nehmen dieses übersteigerte, artifizielle Bild der Natur auf und geben ihnen eine spannende zeitgenössische Komponente. In ihren Rauminstallationen hängen rätselhafte Glasquallen von entrückter Schönheit scheinbar schwerelos im Raum. Die Glasskulpturen sind von einer schwer zu erfassender Körperlichkeit und Farbe, reflektieren Licht und Bewegung der Betrachtenden. Dieser Eindruck wird weiter dadurch gesteigert, als dass es sich hierbei eben nicht um Abbilder der Natur, sondern im weitesten Sinne um dreidimensionale Umsetzungen von idealisierten Kunstformen der Natur handelt. Melli Inks Glasquallen treiben dieses Phantasiespiel der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten der Entwicklung in der Natur frei weiter und lassen zugleich eine starke Stimmung entstehen. In ihrer Schönheit und Filigranität wirken die Objekte zerbrechlich und gefährdet, in ihrer Bewegung eingefroren und dennoch flüchtig. Die Qualle als Ausdruck komplexer Entwicklung, deren surreale Schönheit immer auch Gefahr verspricht, und somit nicht zuletzt die Mystik um ihr Wesen, in der Natur und der Phantasie der Menschen, weiter anreichert. Melli Ink new works Centrik Isler is extraordinarily pleased to inaugurate his exhibition space LIKEYOU.projects with new works by Austrian artist Melli Ink. LIKEYOU.projects is Isler's continuation of his endeavours that have been developing steadily since the 1999 launch of his art platform www.likeyou.com and the LIKEYOU Artists' Community in 2003. At this moment the community comprises more than 150 national and international artists, who have found here an online presence that offers optimal links under very generous terms. With the exhibition space LIKEYOU.projects Isler presents his LIKEYOU artists and the public interested in the arts not only with a further platform that boasts perfect integration into the art scene, but also, for the first time, a platform existing as an actual physical presence. The small but ideal room located at Lavaterstrasse 75 will primarily serve selected LIKEYOU artist as curated venue for presenting their own works. LIKEYOU.projects opens its doors with an installation by artist Melli Ink (1972), who studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, worked many years as a stage designer in New York and London and is now based in Zurich and Berlin. Melli Ink creates delicate objects and sculptures which she assembles into intricate and lavish installations. Her art is a sensuous and tactile way of analysing the possibilities of representing nature in the visual arts. In doing so, however she does not rely on nature as a model but takes up her observations at a point where the ambivalence between scientific representation, illustration and art has already become an integrated entity. The artist, who also works in performance and video, refers with her sculptures and objects to an idealised image of nature as it was cultivated in bourgeois society of the 19th century. Following in the footsteps of romantic research into nature, they assumed that all things in nature were imbued with a soul, wonder and emphatic feelings were put before scientific verifiability. Influenced by Goethe's law of polarity and progression, the bourgeoisie imagined a nature that was continually evolving and was based on a mutually dependend complication of all creatures, whose forms were an infinite spectacle of themselves as well as a mirror of human imagination. Melli Ink's objects take up this exaggerated and artificial image of nature, adding to it an exciting contemporary component. In her installation enigmatic glass medusas that exude an otherworldly beauty hang in the room as if floating. The glass sculptures have a materiality and colour that is difficult to grasp, they reflect light and the movements of the beholder. This impression is further emphasised by the fact that we are not dealing with copies of nature, but, in the broadest sense, with transformations into three dimensions of idealised art forms of nature. Melli Ink's medusas continue this fantastic game of unlimited possibilities as regards natural evolution, at the same time creating an atmosphere of great intensity. In their beauty and delicacy the objects appear fragile and seem arrested in motion, yet they have an ephemeral and elusive air about them. The jelly-fish is here an expression of complex development, but its surreal beauty at the same time triggers a feeling of danger, thus furthering the mystique surrounding the nature of this enigmatic creature.
