Untitled, from "On the Sixth Day", 1996-2004 Fujiflex Print Alessandra Sanguinetti On The Sixth Day Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of color photographs from the series "On the Sixth Day" by Alessandra Sanguinetti. This will be the artist's second solo exhibition at the gallery. In "On the Sixth Day" (1996-2004), Alessandra Sanguinetti draws on myth and fable, focusing on the interaction and interdependence between humans and domesticated animals in the countryside outside Buenos Aires, Argentina. Frequently photographing from the vantage point of her subjects - including lambs, cows, horses, pigs, chickens, dogs, and rabbits - the artist acts as a witness to moments where life and death hang in the balance. Local roadsides, woods, and farm fields provide a backdrop for each scene. Utilizing the trope of the fable, Sanguinetti makes images in which animals and humans act as doubles for each other. The artist states, "To portray an animal is to name it. Once named it acquires a new life, and then, is spared death. Each sacrifice gives us back a disturbing image of the border we cross when we end a life, and what it entails to have sole dominion over another living creature. It is possible that by exploring the fine line that separates us from what we rule, we may reach a better understanding of our own nature." Alessandra Sanguinetti's work will be included in "Ecotopia: The Second ICP Triennial of Photography and Video" at the International Center of Photography, New York from September 14, 2006 to January 7, 2007. Her work has been exhibited at Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie, Arles, France, in 2005 and 2006; the Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires, in 2003; and the El Museo del Barrio Biennial, New York, in 2005. The artist's work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the International Center of Photography; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires. She is the recipient of the 2006 Rencontres d'Arles Discovery Award, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and a Hasselblad Grant. A book entitled "On the Sixth Day" was recently published by Nazraeli Press. Alessandra Sanguinetti was born in New York City in 1968 and was brought up in Argentina. She currently lives and works in Buenos Aires and New York City.
